This session will explore the concepts of Vicarious Trauma, Compassion Fatigue and Burnout and will explain the risk factors for social workers who work with traumatised populations and people facing life changing events, including people impacted by a cancer diagnosis. The session will also explore strategies to prevent and manage Vicarious Trauma, Compassion Fatigue and Burnout; both individually and within teams, and what self-care means in this context.

Alexis Stonebridge BSW

Alexis has been a social worker for over 20 years and is the NSW/ACT Manager of Social Work Services at Slater and Gordon Lawyers. Slater and Gordon’s free Social Work service exists to support clients Australia-wide who are facing a wide range of emotional and practical concerns as they move through the process of claiming compensation. Alexis provides short-term telephone counselling, casework and referral to local or specialised services, to assist clients to build their network of support in the community. Prior to joining Slater and Gordon in 2011, Alexis worked in a range of community based services through UnitingCare Burnside. In her role, she provided support, counselling and referrals to individuals and families facing homelessness, family conflict and crisis.

Alexis is passionate about the need for social workers to recognise the risk of Vicarious Trauma, Compassion Fatigue and Burnout and to learn practical strategies to mitigate these risks throughout their social work career.
